New approaches to the arrangement of plants in order to create various visual effects

The City of Alicante has decided to refresh the visual image of its parks and gardens by setting up new floral and plant arrangements. This will involve redeveloping the flowerbeds and shrubs of the main points of interest in the city. In charge of maintenance, the municipal service of green areas applies a technique known as “mixed borders”, which combines the placement of flowers, shrubs and trees in such a way as to create a layered and more natural effect. .

Following recent trends in park landscaping

Mixed flower beds are designed with a larger structural plant serving as an axis, and around it a combination of species and colors is achieved. In fact, this allows some of the plants placed in previous years to be maintained with only the seasonal flowers to replenish.

If the structural plant is in the center of the garden, the other plants are arranged in layers from highest to lowest until the furnishing species are planted. If, on the other hand, the main plant is next to a wall, the flower bed is structured in a wedge shape from the rear.

The application of this new landscape technique gives a different aspect to the gardens to which we are accustomed and embellishes the spaces in which it is applied. Alicante citizens and visitors are already starting to see it as they walk through areas such as Avenida Doctor Gadea, Plaza Luceros or Parque Canalejas, where this new floral and shrub architecture has already been applied to flower beds ”, explained Manuel Villar, environmental advisor.

For those who are interested in the botanical aspect of plants, the Municipality pointed out that among the multitude of species one could find four types of Begonias, five of Lantanas, two kinds of Lobularias, five types of Salvias, as well as Surfinias, Tagetes, Verbena, Agapanthus and sugar cane.
