Canandaigua OK’d Wood Library Outdoor Reading Garden Plan

CANANDAIGUA – While safe enough for the police chief, the Outdoor Reading Garden offered by the Wood Library is safe enough to be approved by the city.

The town planning commission gave the green light on Tuesday evening to the municipal library’s plan to create a small place for quiet reflection and reading, as well as small group events such as story programs and discussions. on the books.

Concerns from a neighbor as well as some members of the committee were raised a month ago about people gather after hours in the garden, which is to be built on the north side of the North Main Street structure.

The library plans to require registration so that patrons can use the garden during daylight hours, and security cameras and staff will monitor the area. Lighting compatible with the starry sky is offered and the lighting can be improved in the event of a problem.

The entire garden will be fenced, with gates at the entrance, according to project landscape designer Ted Liddell.

“It will be closed and locked overnight,” Liddell said.

Commissioner Stanley Taylor, who was among those calling for a police review of the plan, said his concerns had been allayed.

“I think this is an exceptional project that the library needs to get involved in,” Taylor said.

With the approval of the city, the next step for the library is money. The library is applying for a grant for the project, which includes a sidewalk leading to the less than 2,000 square foot garden, shade and pollinator plantings, a pergola and trellis, and a small reading theater. A concept for the project is due for review later this month, with a formal request for state grant coming later in the year.

Wood Library Executive Director Jenny Goodemote said the outdoor garden is part of the library’s mission to create a comfortable and stable environment for people to satisfy their curiosity, stimulate their imaginations and connect with the local community. and the world, as well as creating a more welcoming environment for people to enjoy its services.
