Willow Alexander, a garden design studio based in the South East of England, has achieved the international Carbon Neutral standard and is now an active participant in the United Nations’ Climate Neutral Now initiative. As the UK’s first carbon neutral premium garden design and maintenance service, delivered using the latest net zero emissions technology, Willow Alexander plans to help the horticulture industry be greener by sharing its carbon-neutral roadmap as part of a new franchise community.
To achieve the international Carbon Neutral standard, Willow Alexander calculated her footprint for 2021 on Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions with the support of One Carbon World. Its Scope 3 statements included all organic and hard-structured materials needed for design and landscaping projects. These still unavoidable emissions have been rebalanced thanks to the withdrawal of voluntary carbon credits from an afforestation project in Uruguay.
Achieving carbon neutrality is a step forward in formalizing the reduction strategies that Willow Alexander began implementing in 2018. These included shifting to a fleet of electric vehicles, introducing battery-powered tools, offsetting the personal emissions of its workforce and forming partnerships with like-minded partners. attentive suppliers as part of a Greener Planet promise. Participation in the United Nations’ Climate Neutral Now initiative demonstrates Willow Alexander’s ongoing commitment to measuring and reducing emissions and contributing to climate action. It is one of the few companies to achieve GOLD recognition in the Measure and Contribute stages of this initiative, and working with One Carbon World has proven insightful in helping Willow Alexander identify remaining emissions hotspots throughout its supply chain. Now, with a reporting baseline year in place, Willow Alexander has set reduction targets for Year 2 that align with science goals.
Samuel Collett, CEO of Willow Alexander, said: “We have always been climate conscious and have implemented a philosophy and service that we were proud to bring to people’s homes. Becoming carbon neutral was the natural next step for us so we could share this roadmap with other gardeners and service providers and help customers make a better choice. We are proud to be part of the United Nations’ Climate Neutral Now initiative and strive to further reduce our impact on our journey to net zero.
Andrew Bowen, CEO of One Carbon World, added: “We are delighted to confirm that Willow Alexander has achieved both the international standard of carbon neutrality and participation in the United Nations’ Climate Neutral Now initiative, and we are also proud to announce that they are carbon neutral for the entire footprint that has been measured. This clearly shows how committed they are to sustainability. Every show they have offset directly supports reforestation programs in South America. Congratulations on your journey towards carbon neutrality!”
